Kolhapur district is the southernmost district of Maharashtra. Its headquarter is Kolhapur City which is an ancient city. The city is situated on the banks of river Panchganga and is known as 'Dakshin Kashi'. Hindu mythology holds that Kolhapur was founded by Kolhasur, a Rakshasha (demon spirit). Kolhasur was killed by Lakshmi ( or Mahalakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity). Kolhasura's dying wish was to have the city named after him and his wish was granted.
